10 Quick Tips for a Great Move

Use strong boxes that can be tightly secured and consider purchasing special cartons for moving your wardrobe, dishes, and other valuable or fragile items. If at all possible, keep boxes under 50 pounds.
Make sure your packing supplies are handy. This includes: packing tape, marking pens, scissors, and packing material to cushion packed items. Bubble wrap, newspaper, and butchers paper are all useful for packing.
Pack stereos, VCRs, DVD players, computers, and televisions in their original packaging. Make sure you label wires and cables. If you cant pack remote controls with the equipment they control, consider labeling and placing all remote controls in a single box.
Clearly label each box with the contents and destination room. Label fragile items and items that should be packed last so that they are unloaded first. Packing one room at a time makes the labeling process easier.
Carry essential items such as a change of clothes, toiletries, medication, and personal items with you.
Valuable items such as jewlery, personal documents, or important paperwork should not be packed but carried with you during the move.
If you have your rugs and carpets professionally cleaned prior to moving, you can keep them in the packaging from the cleaner for the move. If floor coverings are loaded into the truck last, furniture can be placed on them when it is removed from the truck.
Large Appliances should be clean and dry prior to moving- damp refrigerators can begin to mildew during a move and grease or dirt left on other appliances (such as your range) can leave spots on other items being moved.
Gather long handled garden and yard tools into a bundle and secure. Have them wrapped in a moving pad by your movers prior to loading.
